According to the rules and regulations of the Turkish Higher Education Council (YOK), Turkish high school graduates must take a central exam called the Student Selection Exam (OSS) to access higher education programs.
According to the rules and regulations of the Turkish Cypriot Higher Education Accreditation Council (YÖDAK), graduates of Northern Cyprus High Schools must take the Central University Examinations, as well as the Central Examinations conducted by Turkish graduates.
Eligible overseas students can apply to university provided they have at least 12 years of pre-university education and a high school diploma or equivalent.
In addition to admission requirements, English language proficiency determines whether a student can enter a college degree program directly or complete one or two semesters of an English language introductory program. Students admitted to an academic program provide evidence of an internationally recognized English language degree or take an English exam administered by the university.
Programs and qualifications provided
In Northern Cyprus, higher education is provided in both public and private institutions (a total of 8 universities). Higher education includes all post-secondary programs with a minimum duration of two years. This system consists of universities (state and foundation). Each university has faculties and schools consisting of four-year undergraduate and other degree programs as follows:
Associate Degree. An associate’s degree (based on the US system) is awarded after the successful completion of two years of full-time university study. Associate degrees are generally practical in nature, and students who graduate with an appropriate GPA can be transferred to a four-year undergraduate course.
Bachelor Degree. Undergraduate courses are eight semesters (four years). In general, the program includes courses taught, laboratory work and internships in appropriate cases, and a graduation project depending on the field of study. For graduation, students generally need a cumulative credit hour of a total of 120 and a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 for graduation hours.
Master Degree. Master’s courses usually last three to four semesters and require the completion of 21 credit hours (seven master’s courses) and a dissertation that must be defended in an oral examination. Students must earn a minimum CGPA of 3.00 to graduate. Master’s degrees without a dissertation element are also offered and include the completion of 10 postgraduate courses, a total of 30 hours of credit and project submission. For all types of programs, students are accepted on the basis of a bachelor’s degree (typically with CGPA 2.5) or equivalent.
Master of Business Administration (MBA). The Master of Business Administration consists of 14 three-credit courses (42 credits in total) that include an optional six-credit thesis. This degree is usually completed in three semesters and is followed by postgraduate courses that include a major in business administration. Previous professional experience is an advantage.
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Doctoral degrees require completion of 21 credits with a GPA of at least 3.5 and submission and defense of the dissertation. Prior to taking the oral exam, a candidate must publish publications related to his / her research topic in an international journal (specifically the Extended Science Citation List, Social Science Citation List, or Arts and Humanities Citation Index). Scoring system
The grading system follows the 4.00 grade point average (GPA) and the letter grades and related scores are as follows. Generally, a GPA of 2.00 or higher is approved for one academic year. A student who has an average grade point average for a semester between 3.00 and 3.49 is considered an honorary student. Students with an average grade point average of 3.50 or higher are considered students with excellent honors.
